Tibet train leads to Nathu-La buzz

The Asian Age[Tuesday, August 08, 2006 10:10] By Kaushik Mitter Lhasa (Tibet), August 7 - As the 30-hour-long train ride from Lanzhou in the heart of western China, traversing almost 2,000 km across the Gobi Desert and then the plateau known as the Roof of the World, finally rolled into the Tibetan capital?s spanking new railway station on the dot of 10.30 pm Sunday, and the brilliantly-lit Potala Palace shimmered magically in the night sky on the short journey into town, the buzz in this modern city once fabled as Shangri-La appeared to be centred around Nathu-La, and what the reopening of that pass signified for Tibet?s new place in the sun.

Patna, July 20:The Buddhist heritage town of Bodh Gaya was in for a shock on Thursday when some locals discovered that a branch of the sacred Bodhi Tree on the premises of the Maha Bodhi Temple had been chopped off. The Maha Bodhi Temple is a world heritage site and one of the most sacred destinations for Buddhists around the world. The Bodhi Tree is believed to be the sixth generation of the peepal (Ficus religiosa) tree under which Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment some 2,500 years ago.

China unhappy over Tibet refugees Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, July 4 - China has taken up seriously with the Nepal government the matter of "vulnerable" Tibetan refugees currently in Nepal being resettled in the United States, said Deputy Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli here Monday. Replying to questions from members of the parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs and Human Rights, DPM and Foreign Minister Oli said these concerns were raised with him by Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing in Geneva recently.
