| Devotees flock Tibet?s Kumbum monastery as rumour of Dalai Lama visit spreads |
| | Phayul[Saturday, July 15, 2006 18:21] | Delhi, July 15 : A rumour has spread like a wildlife in Tibet that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is on a visit to Tibet and China. The news has caused impatient and enthusiastic rush among Tibetans especially those living around Kumbum Jampaling (also known as Ta?er) monastery in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo, now incorporated into Xining, capital of Qinghai province.
Hordes of Tibetans in different groups from Amdo and Tibet Autonomous Region have assembled in Kumbum and more are said to be on their way hoping to get blessings from H.H. the Dalai Lama. The false news has been in circulation for days that the Dalai Lama was visiting Tibet and that his itenerary consisted of a stopover at the sacred Kumbum monastery. There have been news of some Tibetans inside Tibet making phonecalls to their relatives outside Tibet to enquire about the accuracy of the news.
The Dharamsala-based exile Tibetan government?s Department of Security has denied that the Dalai Lama was visiting Tibet and China. In an interview with Radio Free Asia?s (RFA) Tibetan service on July 15, Mr. Ngodup, secretary of the department said it was a false report and the Dalai Lama had no plans to undertake such a visit for the time being.
?The news is completely baseless because His Holiness the Dalai Lama is currently in Dharamsala taking much-needed rest on his doctor?s advice after a hectic travel schedule. Also in August, His Holiness will give teachings to a group of Korean devotees in Dharamsala?, he said.
RFA also reported that Tibetans inside Tibet were acutely concerned about His Holiness? health ever since he cancelled a scheduled Europe tour. To this, Mr. Ngodup replied that there was no cause of worry regarding His Holiness?s health as the Tibetan leader was taking rest not because of some illness but he had been advised by his doctor to do so.
In his annual March 10 statement this year, H.H. the Dalai Lama had expressed his wish to visit the sacred pilgrimage site of Wutai Shan in China. Since then, there have been a great number of rumours that predicted an impending visit by the Dalai Lama to China and Tibet.
Kumbum Jampaling monastery is located in the famous Kokonor valley about seventeen miles southwest of Xining. It was founded in 1583 by the third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso. |
